Dealing With an Inheritance

An inheritance can be a great thing, but it has downfalls. If you are someone that was left an inheritance, chances are you had a close relationship with that person who passed. First, it is wise to take your time and not rush into things; emotions may cloud judgment, so it is best to wait some time before dealing with the inheritance. Most likely, there will be legalities to abide by, there will be tax, and it could possibly change your estate planning.

When you are ready to deal with the inheritance, get assistance from a professional because there are many options and you want to make the right one for your family. Also, the inheritance could affect your family with estate planning; sometimes it may or may not be worth it. If you choose to accept it, consider creating trusts for your children, creating trusts could help increase exemptions on personal estate tax.  Weigh your tax options as well, an IRA can be cashed out or instant funds. A cash out will be taxed full income tax rates every dollar, so this can decrease the value of the inheritance a lot. Decide which option is best for your wealth and don’t be afraid to get assistance.

Estate planning can involve a complex web of tax rules and regulations.  Tax laws surrounding estate planning concepts are subject to change.

Retirement Success

There are different measures of retirement success, and these are all personal. Some people may measure their retirement success through income, health, or family. Some measures for success may overlap and some will be different.

Income replacement is usually a measure of successful retirement for most people. Some people may find that they want to spend more time with family. Others may value longevity and good health. Some people may want to make a difference by donating to charities. Meeting your own expectations at retirement may also measure how you view your retirement success; but the most important aspect is doing what makes you happy.

Have You Considered Life Insurance?

Many young people do not have life insurance, most people don’t think about the end of their life, especially when they are unmarried or young. It is important to start thinking about getting life insurance when you get married or have kids.

There are two types of life insurance; term and cash value.  Terms are less expensive, but are limited. They have a designated time period, if you live past the term, you can try to renew them. Term policies will provide a stated benefit if you do pass away during or at the end of the designated time. Cash value premiums are permanent; they gain value during your lifetime and pay out upon the time you pass away. People decide which type of insurance is right for them based on their own needs.

Warning: A Life ALert Scam

Robocalls advertising a free life alert, are calling seniors across the country and claiming that they are the original life alert. The original Life Alert is well known and advertised on TV with a commercial that shows an elderly person falling and unable to get up. The robocalls are tricking the elderly by saying the life alert is free, they ask for a credit card number and Medicare number which is the social security number.  The fraudulent company then charges a monthly fee for a life alert system that is not the original that they advertise. In some cases the life alert wasn’t even delivered to the customer and they were paying around 30 dollars a month.

Be aware of these fraudulent robocalls and advertisements and never give out personal information until you are positive they are legitimate.

Enough to Retire?

Millions of Americans have not saved enough money for retirement because retirement is not on their radar, it may seem like a distant and far away phase of life. People have busy lives and many expenses, saving money for retirement is on the back burner. This is a huge mistake because the longer retirement is ignored the worse the financial situation may be when that time comes. Individuals need to face the facts and start making steps toward saving and preparing for their future life.

Families or couples may need to consider their home expense, moving to a cheaper neighborhood may become necessary.  Also, spend less, as unappealing as that sounds, cutting out unnecessary expenses will help save more money; cutting out cable TV, or anything deemed unnecessary. Also, maximize your 401(k), and take full advantage of it, sometimes this means taking your social security later.

Legacy Planning

Estate planning is important, but legacy planning can be even more important because it will communicate to your heirs your wants, wishes, and needs. Legacy planning involves financial security, the distribution and management of your estate, and protecting your estate and business.

If you pass away unexpectedly, a legacy plan will state your wants and wishes and the direction you want your financials to go. It communicates your lifetime experiences so your heirs know what you would want to do with your business and estate in the event that you pass.

In estate planning many factors involve your heirs; in legacy planning this also holds true but it additionally involves you as the number one factor. When it comes to legacy planning you come first! Get your financials in order before planning for your heir's. Think of it this way: how can you plan for your heirs if you haven’t planned for yourself?

Questioning Retirement Assumptions

Many baby boomers expect a typical, planned out and smooth retirement

This is possible for many of them, but for others, the road will be different. There is not a generic road to take when it comes to an individual’s personalized retirement plan. Financials, life expectancy, and health lead individuals to create their own retirement path and plan.

Here are some assumptions that many people have on retirement.

#1 Take social security as late as possible because you will most likely live 15-20 years after you retire

v  People born in the years 1943-1954 will have a 25% smaller monthly benefit if they claim their Social Security at 62 instead of the “full” retirement age at 66. So the question is why would anyone take their social security so early in their 60’s?

v  The answer is that people may really need that income for medical bills, and other essentials. Some individuals don’t expect to live 15-20 years after retirement due to hereditary diseases. Evaluate your own life and future and then make that decision.

#2 You shouldn’t invest as you get older, and the payout of a lump sum is the best option.

v  As investors grow older they want to take less risk in their investment portfolios. This doesn’t have to be the case for everyone, there are many retirees that have insufficient savings and may need to continue to invest. Sometimes the outcomes can override the risks taken.

v  Meanwhile, many corporations are offering a choice for pension plan assets as either a lump sum payout or periodic lifelong payments.  Both are options and depend on life expectancy, so these decisions are circumstantial and unique to each individual.

The Market in Easy Terms

The financial market and economy have specific jargon that numerous people may be unfamiliar with. Here is a summary of the stock market jargon.

Stock Market- The Dow, the S&P 500, and NASDAQ

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a stock market index that tracks 30 US publicly owned companies and tracks them in the span of a market day.  The S&P 500, or the Standard & Poor’s 500, is based off of market capitalizations of 500 top US publicly traded company; it is commonly used because it represents around 70% of the stock market.  NASDAQ is an American stock exchange that tracks over 3,000 companies. These indices are unmanaged measures of market conditions it is not possible to invest directly into an index.

At the end of the marketing day there is a close, and the numbers are then calculated at a price level. The S&P 500 and NASDAQ are capitalization-weighted. The Dow is price-weighted. Capitalization weighted means that components are weighted to the total market value of the company’s index, so it gives more of an overall view. Price weighted is where each stock makes up a part of the index that is in proportion to the price per share.

2012: A Year of Change

2012 will be a year of change for the retirement industry. Experts agree that 401(k) plan fee disclosure rules, affecting plan sponsors and plan participants, and the U.S. Department of Labor’s reproposal of its rule amending the definition of fiduciary under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act will have the most impact industry-wide. Tax reform legislation that could impact how individuals save for retirement is another issue that probably won’t be decided in 2012, but will be debated a great deal.

"The biggest thing is the implementation of fee disclosure,” said Brian Graff, executive director and CEO of the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries. “This is the big new thing in 2012. People are going to get a lot more information than they thought of or wanted before. The big question everyone is waiting to assess how plan sponsors and participants will react to the waterfall of information?”

Allen Vaughn, president and chief fiduciary auditor for 401-k.pro Fiduciary Managers/The 401k Advisory Group, Inc. in Dunwoody, Ga., said he believes 2012 will be the year of lawsuits.

He fears the hoopla over the fee disclosure regulations will be like “watching a tornado destroy a town. … What is going to happen with 408(b)(2), one thing I advocated for, is it is going to show people the expenses, which I’m all for, that will make people smart shoppers. People need to see the benchmarks. They need to see what the average fund expenses are for record keeping, the average commission brokers make and the fee advisors make.”
